1. What’s CTEC and who needs it?
If you do taxes in CA for pay (and you’re not a CPA, EA, or attorney), you need to be a CTEC Registered Tax Preparer.
2. How do I get certified?
Take a 60-hour course, pass the test, get a $5K bond, register, and pass a background check.
3. How do I keep it?
Every year: 20 hours CE, $5K bond, renew by Oct 31.
4. Missed the deadline?
You’ve got until Jan 15 (plus $55 fee). After that—back to square one with the 60-hour course.
5. How long does it last?
One year. Register after Aug 1 and you’re covered through next year.
